A debridement is defined as the “gross removal of plaque and calculus (tartar) that interfere with the ability of the dentist to perform a comprehensive oral examination”.

Gross debridement is typically prescribed as an initial step when significant build-up of of plaque and tartar is present, making it difficult to conduct a comprehensive examination. It helps improve visibility and access for a more thorough evaluation, subsequent treatments and lays the foundations for an ongoing oral hygiene maintenance plan.
